![]() I'm certain it won't take any time at all for the readers to forget that our hero was a grown man in his previous life. I began to worry: is this story actually extremely unsuited to a visual medium?! Thankfully, the cute way that Kawakami-sensei drew our slime managed to assuage my fears a bit. All we have are slimes, goblins, wolves, dwarves. In other words, there's no female lead! It's quite possible not to have a "heroine" in the traditional sense, but not having any female characters whatsoever is a problem. Yes, there are monsters, of course, but you just don't see any human characters. The other problem was that the start of the story features very few characters. It's the exact sort of touch that can only be done in the manga format, and never in a novel. Thankfully, Kawakami-sensei cleared that hurdle with flying colors! His depiction of the senses unfolding worked wonders. Not having eyes wasn't a big deal in a text novel, but it's a major issue for a manga. The first problem was the protagonist's sense of vision at the start of the story. We settled on two main issues for the manga. At this meeting we did our planning, and also had to do signings for a giveaway, which was a difficult set of circumstances-not that I'm complaining. Late last year, I had my first meeting with Kawakami-sensei. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime began its life as a novel on the Internet, and now it's actually got its own manga adaptation! So I thought I'd reflect on some of the challenges of turning it into a visual format.
